Super Frothy Mocha Latte (Dairy-Free)

Happy New Year! It is the first day of 2020 and it’s already off to a great start because I began it with a big, delicious cup of coffee. And not just any regular cup of coffee either. Oh no, this was an extra foamy, creamy and chocolatey cup of pure amazingness!

As I have bragged before, I have the privilege of having my very own barista at home, my husband Matt.  I have boasted so much about his heavenly lattes that I decided there was no better time than to kick off a new year showing you how to make one yourself.

The best part of this frothy mocha latte is that it is so easy to make. It is really the products you use that will help achieve the best result. So let’s talk about what you need.

What You Need to Make a Homemade Mocha Latte

Strong brewed coffee or espresso
  • We use a Moka Pot (like the one pictured below) and Cafe Bustelo (espresso style ground coffee) to make a strong, concentrated coffee. I have gotten questions about how we use our Moka Pot so I will definitely work on a blog post to answer those questions.  In the meantime, here are two other methods you can use.
  • If you have an espresso machine, then two shots of espresso is what you’ll need for this recipe.
  • If neither of the above is available, a strong brewed coffee will also work. Just note that the coffee will have more water in it, so you will need to adjust the amount of coffee you add to your latte depending on how strong you want the coffee taste.

Chocolate or dark chocolate almond milk

  • Both the refrigerated Silk and Almond Breeze chocolate almond milks are so thick that there is no need to use any additional creamer. The Dark Chocolate Silk Almond Milk is especially delicious in this mocha latte.
  • I also highly recommend the classic chocolate creamer from Nutpods. The chocolate flavor is not as strong, but it froths up incredibly well and its Whole30 approved.

French Press

  • This is a crucial part of Matt’s homemade lattes. We have used other methods of frothing the milk. However, the French Press does such an extraordinary job that we don’t even use it to make coffee anymore. Trust me, if you want an unbelievably frothy latte, then this is the way to go!

How to Make Super Frothy Mocha Latte (Dairy-Free)

Now that you know what you need, let’s talk about the easy steps to make this homemade mocha latte.

To begin, brew your strong coffee or espresso using one of the methods discussed above.

Next, pour two cups of chocolate almond milk in a microwave-safe measuring cup or container. Heat the almond milk for 2-3 minutes until desired heat is reached (you can also heat in a small pot on the stovetop).

If you are using chocolate Nutpods, you may want to mix half regular unsweetened almond milk with the creamer. This way you won’t use up all of your creamer and the combination makes a nice, creamy froth.

Once hot, pour the milk into the French press. The level of the milk in the French press needs to be high enough so that the plunger can be completely submerged in the liquid. Two cups of milk should do it, but if not then add a little more.

Place the plunger inside the French press and carefully pump the plunger up and down. The more you pump the more froth you will create. Keep pumping until the milk level has almost doubled in volume.

Pour 1/4 cup of espresso into a large mug. This is equal to 2 ounces of espresso. This is the same amount that both Grande and Venti drinks have at Starbucks.

Pour the frothy almond milk from the French press over the coffee until the mug is filled to the top. To ensure the coffee is mixed well with the milk, use a long spoon to mix the coffee at the bottom of the mug.

As I mentioned earlier, if you are using regular coffee, taste your drink and add more coffee to reach your desired coffee taste.

That’s it, an easy and super frothy mocha latte (dairy-free) made right at home. If your new year’s resolution is to stop spending money on those fancy lattes, now you can make your own right at home.

I hope you enjoy!
