Extremely easy, fast and healthy Avocado Tostadas make a great snack, light lunch or meatless dinner. Plus fresh, creamy avocado on top of a crunchy, crisp tostada is a delicious combination.
Before avocado toast was all the rage, I was deeply in love with the avocado tostada.
Growing up my mom would prepare tostadas de aguacate and top them with fresh vegetables, shredded cheese, and homemade salsa. We would always devour every last one.
Nowadays, I make these for my husband and kids and they are also huge fans. There is just something so delicious about creamy avocado on a crunchy, crisp, and toasty corn tortilla.

What are Tostadas?
The word tostada means toasted in Spanish. In terms of Mexican food, tostadas refer to flat corn tortillas that are either baked or fried until crispy. They are then topped with different meats, seafood, or vegetables.

The Ingredients
- Tostada Shells: You can buy tostada shells for an even faster result, but making your own is actually extremely easy and taste so much better than store-bought. Click here to learn How to Make Tostada Shells.
- Avocados: Choose avocados that are dark green, almost black, and yield slightly when gently squeezed. They should not be overly hard, overly soft, or mushy.
- Lettuce: Use iceberg or romaine lettuce which are crisp and don't have an overpowering flavor.
- Tomato: Roma tomatoes are more commonly used to top tostadas. Choose ripe tomatoes that are firm, but have a little give when pressed gently or squeezed.
- Cheese: Use grated white Mexican cheese like a muenster or Chihuahua or a crumbled cheese like queso fresco or cotija.
- Salsa: A salsa is optional but is the perfect addition to add extra flavor and spice. Check out the "How to Serve" section below for some salsa recipe ideas.

How to Store
Store any leftover mashed avocado in an air-tight container. Then, press a piece of plastic wrap right on top of the avocado. Cover with the lid and store in the refrigerator for one day.
You can also mix in some lime juice as the acidity will keep the avocado from browning too quickly.
Store any leftover shredded lettuce, diced tomato and shredded cheese in small ziplock bags or air-tight containers in the refrigerator.
As for the tostada shells, leave them on the counter in a ziplock bag or an air-tight container for up to 5 days
Substitutions
- Leave off the shredded cheese for vegan tostadas.
Tips and Variations
- Once prepared serve the tostadas immediately otherwise they will get soggy.
- Instead of plain avocado, use guacamole instead. Try either Roasted Green Chile Guacamole or Spicy Guacamole with Roasted Vegetables.
- Top your tostadas with some black beans, pinto beans or refried beans for added protein.
