Agua de Melón (Mexican Melon Water)

One of the most popular aguas frescas, this Agua de Melón is a refreshing and easy-to-make Mexican drink. With just cantaloupe, water and a little honey, this naturally sweet melon water is a simple childhood favorite I still make all summer long.

Aguas frescas, like Agua de Sandia, Agua de Pepino, and this melon version are classic Mexican drinks made by blending fruit with water and a touch of sweetener. Today's recipe uses minimal ingredients, comes together in minutes, and highlights juicy cantaloupe, especially perfect during its peak season from June to September.

Agua de Melón is one the most refreshing drinks from my childhood summers. My mom made it with fresh, ripe cantaloupe for a simple, hydrating treat that's naturally rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and electrolytes. Now I make it for my own family, and it's still a favorite.

    Ingredients & Substitutions

You'll need ripe cantaloupe, water and a touch of honey or honey simple syrup for easier blending. You can also use honeydew instead of cantaloupe, or swap honey with cane sugar, agave or your preferred sweetener.

See recipe card for other ingredients and quantities.

    How to Make Melon Water

Chunks of cantaloupe in a mixing bowl
    1. Cut Cantaloupe: Wash and cut the cantaloupe into large pieces. You can remove the seeds, but I recommend blending the cantaloupe with the seeds as they are a great source of antioxidants and nutrients.

    1. Add Ingredients: Add cold, filtered water and cantaloupe pieces to a blender.
    Blender filled with melon water
    1. Blend: Blend 1-2 minutes until smooth.

    1. Strain: Strain using a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth (to remove any remaining pulp or seeds that may have been left behind) into a large pitcher.

    1. Mix Together: Stir in the remaining 2 cups of water and taste. If a sweeter result is desired, add honey. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour or serve immediately over ice. You can also garnish with diced cantaloupe pieces if desired.

    Equipment

    • Blender
    • Fine mesh sieve
    • Pitcher

    Ingredients

    • 1 medium ripe cantaloupe
    • ¼ cup honey or sweetener of choice
    • 5 cups cold water, divided
    • ice for serving

    Instructions

    • Wash and cut the cantaloupe into large chunks. I recommend blending the cantaloupe with the seeds as they are a great source of antioxidants and nutrients, but you can certainly remove them if you prefer.
    • Add 3 cups of cold water and cantaloupe pieces to a blender.
    • Blend for 1-2 minutes until smooth.
    • Strain (especially if you blended with the seeds) using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove any remaining pulp or seeds. If using a high-powered blender, straining may not be necessary.
    • Pour into a large pitcher and stir in the remaining 2 cups of water.
    • Taste. If a sweeter result is desired then stir in 1-2 tablespoons of honey at a time until desired sweetness is reached.
    • Refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until cold.
    • Serve cold and over ice if desired.

    Notes

    • If your melon is ripe you may choose not to add any sweetener. However, honey adds depth to the sweetness of the cantaloupe, resulting in a more well-rounded drink.
    • You can substitute the honey for simple syrup, cane sugar, agave nectar or your preferred sweetener.

I had a cantaloupe that no one was eating, but when I made it into this agua fresca it was gone in 20 minutes.
