When I want a deliciously indulgent coffee, I have no need to visit a coffee shop. Instead, I enjoy an extra foamy, creamy, and chocolatey cup of pure amazingness right at home.
As I have bragged before, I have the privilege of having my very own barista, my husband Matt. He makes me such amazing lattes and in this post I am showing you how to make one of my absolute favorite ones.

Why You'll Love This Mocha Latte Recipe
- Easy To Make: Only two ingredients are needed to make this frothy, homemade mocha.
- Great Flavor: The slight bitter taste from the coffee is so good combined with the sweetness from the chocolate.
- Rich and Creamy: The chocolate milk helps create a velvety, smooth drink that is absolutely irresistible.
- Frothy: It is really the products and tools you use that will help achieve the best, foamy result.
- Dairy-Free: Although you can use regular chocolate milk, I enjoy this with dairy-free milk or creamer and the result is just as good if not better.
- Money-Saver: You can stop spending money on those fancy lattes at coffeeshops, now you can make your own right at home.

The Ingredients
- Espresso or Strong Coffee
- We use a moka pot and Cafe Bustelo (espresso-style ground coffee) to make a strong, concentrated coffee.
- If you have an espresso machine, then use two shots of espresso for this recipe.
- If neither of the above is available, a strong-brewed coffee will also work. Just note that the coffee will have more water in it, so you will need to adjust the amount of coffee you add to your latte depending on how strong you want the coffee flavor.
- Chocolate Milk
- Refrigerated chocolate almond milks like, Silk and Almond Breeze, or oatmeal chocolate milk are so thick that there is no need to use any additional creamer. The Dark Chocolate Silk Almond Milk is especially delicious in this mocha latte.
- For a low-sugar variation, I also highly recommend the classic chocolate creamer from nutpods. The chocolate flavor is not as strong, but it has a hint of chocolate that is very good. It also froths up incredibly well and is Whole30 compatible.
I also love adding Nutpods creamer to my coffee. Nutpods is a dairy-free coffee creamer that comes in many delicious flavors and froths up beautifully. Use my code EVERYDAYLATINA and you can get 15% off your first order on nutpods.com.
The Equipment Needed
- Moka Pot: As mentioned above, we use a moka pot to make our espresso. A moka pot is a stove-top coffee maker. It passes pressurized boiling water through ground coffee resulting in espresso-like coffee. It is small in size, easy to use, and yields smooth, delicious coffee.
- Frother: There are two different gadgets that you can use to make the incredible foam for your lattes.
- If you already own a French press, then you have just what you need to make foam. A French Press does such an extraordinary job that we even stopped using it to make coffee. Trust me, if you want an unbelievably frothy latte, this will do the trick.
- We also own an electric milk frother and steamer that does an amazing job at frothing the milk. I like that this machine is easy to use, can warm up the milk, and also has a cold foam option.
How to Make a Homemade Mocha
French Press Method
1. Brew the Coffee
- Brew your strong coffee or espresso using one of the methods discussed above.
2. Warm up the Milk
- Pour two cups of chocolate milk in a microwave-safe measuring cup or container.
- Heat the almond milk for 2-3 minutes until desired heat is reached (you can also heat in a small pot on the stovetop).
- Once hot, pour the milk into the French press. The level of the milk in the French press needs to be high enough so that the plunger can be completely submerged in the liquid. Two cups of milk should do it, but if not then add a little more.
3. Froth the Milk
- Place the plunger inside the French press and carefully pump the plunger up and down. The more you pump the more froth you will create.
- Keep pumping until the milk level has almost doubled in volume.
4. Prepare the Latte
- Pour ¼ cup of espresso into a large mug. This is equal to 2 ounces of espresso. This is the same amount that both Grande and Venti drinks have at Starbucks.
- Pour the frothy milk from the French press over the coffee until the mug is filled to the top. To ensure the coffee is mixed well with the milk, use a long spoon to mix the coffee at the bottom of the mug.
- As I mentioned earlier, if you are using regular coffee, taste your drink and add more coffee to reach your desired coffee taste.
Electric Steamer Method
- Brew your coffee.
- Add your chosen chocolate milk or creamer to the steamer. Fill to the line indicated on the inside and froth.
- Pour ¼ cup of espresso into a large mug.
- Pour the frothy milk from the French press over the coffee until the mug is filled to the top. To ensure the coffee is mixed well with the milk, use a long spoon to mix the coffee at the bottom of the mug.
How to Serve
Like any coffee, this drink is great with breakfast, but it is also a delicious treat. Serve it with one of the following for a decadent dessert:
- Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Tres Leches Cake
- Gluten-Free Lemon Berry Dump Cake
- Light and Fluffy Gluten-Free Powdered Donuts
- Egg-Free Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
- Coconut Flour Oatmeal Cookies
- Gluten-Free Apple Oat Muffins
Tips and Variations
- Regular chocolate milk also works if dairy isn't an issue for you. Use a whole milk variety for thicker, silkier foam.
- The chocolate Nutpods is unsweetened. If you like it sweetened, you can add a teaspoon (or more) of maple syrup to the creamer when you froth it.
- Make your latte extra decadent by drizzling in some chocolate syrup and topping with whipped cream.
I hope you enjoy!
