With a sweet and tangy combination of watermelon and strawberries, it's the perfect beverage for hot summer days.
Agua de Sandia has always been one of my favorite flavors of aguas frescas. My love for this classic inspired me to experiment with new flavors, leading to the creation of Cucumber Watermelon Agua Fresca.
Now, I'm excited to share another new concoction with a mix of watermelon and strawberry. This blend brings together the natural sweetness of juicy watermelon with the bright acidity of strawberries for a drink that's both delicious and incredibly refreshing.
Not only is it flavorful and easy to make, but it's also nourishing, packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants like vitamin C, potassium, and lycopene.
Let me show you how to make it.

Ingredients & Substitutions
For the best flavor, use ripe strawberries and watermelon, either seedless or with seeds. Fresh lime juice adds zest and balances the sweetness of the fruits. Depending on how sweet your fruit is, you can add a sweetener if needed. I prefer honey for its mild flavor and health benefits, but cane sugar or a simple syrup also work.

How to Choose a Ripe Watermelon
For the juiciest and sweetest agua fresca, select a ripe watermelon. Look for these signs:
- Yellow field spot: A creamy yellow spot on the underside indicates ripeness.
- Heavy for its size: A heavier watermelon is usually juicier.
- Dry stem: A green stem means it was picked too early and won't be ripe.
- Webbing or brown marks: These scars from pollination often signify sweetness. The more scars mean the sweeter the fruit.
How to Choose Ripe Strawberries
Similarly, ripe strawberries will also result in a much more flavorful drink. Here is what to look for:
- Color: Bright red with no white or green spots.
- Texture: Firm but slightly soft.
- Avoid: Mushy or soft spots that indicate the strawberries are overripe.
- Smell: A sweet and fragrant aroma. If they smell sour or have no scent, they may not be ripe.
- Size: Medium to large strawberries are generally considered to be the sweetest (avoid smaller or very large ones).
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Prep the Watermelon: Wash and cut the watermelon into large cubes.
- Prep Strawberries: Wash strawberries and remove stems. Slice or cut the strawberries into fourths.
- Combine Ingredients: Add water, watermelon, strawberries, lime juice and ice to the blender.
- Blend and Sweetener (Optional): Blend until smooth. Taste. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add the sweetener of your choice and blend again to incorporate.
- Strain if Needed: For an extra smooth texture, strain the blended mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth. If you're using a high-powered blender, like a Vitamix, straining may not be necessary.
- Chill and Serve: Pour into a pitcher or bottle and refrigerate until chilled (about 1 hour). Serve over ice in individual glasses. To prevent watering down the agua fresca, avoid adding ice directly to the pitcher. Garnish each glass with a piece of watermelon or a slice of strawberry or mix in small pieces of a watermelon and/or strawberries into the pitcher.
How to Store
Store in an air-tight bottle or other container for up to 3 days. Any pulp will settle at the bottom so give the bottle a shake before serving.

Vitamix Blender
I use my high-powered Vitamix every day. It blends aguas frescas so well that there is no need to strain.
Tips and Variations
- Add Mint: Blend mint leaves with the rest of the ingredients for a variation in flavor.
- Make Paletas: Freeze the agua fresca in popsicle molds for a refreshing frozen treat.
- Make a Cocktail or Mocktail: Add a splash of tequila or vodka to make a cocktail or add sparkling water for a refreshing mocktail.
