Inspired by my love for fruit-infused drinks, such as Pineapple Agua Fresca , and the fizzy concoction my husband and I came up with, Sparkling Watermelon Agua Fresca, I bring to you a new recipe for a refreshingly delicious mocktail.

This recipe uses fresh fruit to create a vibrant and thirst-quenching drink without the need for alcohol. By combining the natural sweetness of blueberries, the vibrant tanginess of lime, and the effervescence of sparkling water, you get a bubbly, cooling beverage that will definitely hit the spot during the hot summer months.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Light and Refreshing: A great summer refreshment that's light, bubbly, and will keep you cool and hydrated.
    • Great Flavor: The combination of tangy lime juice with the homemade blueberry simple syrup is the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity.
    • Natural Ingredients: This recipe uses natural ingredients like blueberries and honey, so you can enjoy a refreshing drink without artificial flavors or excessive sugars.
    • Easy to Make: With just a few simple steps, you can easily whip up this refreshing mocktail. The best part is that you can make the blueberry syrup ahead of time and have it ready for whenever you want to enjoy this tasty drink.

    The Ingredients

Two bottles of Pellegrino, bowl of fresh blueberries, two limes, a bowl with ice and a small bowl with honey.

First, here are the ingredients for the blueberry simple syrup, which adds a luscious sweetness and an intense blueberry flavor to the mocktail:

    • Blueberries: Fresh or frozen blueberries bring their natural sweetness and vibrant color to the simple syrup, infusing it with their distinct flavor.
    • Honey: I love the flavor and richness this natural sweetener adds to the syrup. It also enhances the sweetness of the blueberries without overpowering them.
    • Water: When making simple syrup, water is needed as the liquid component to dissolve the honey and boil the blueberries.
    • Salt: A small pinch of salt helps bring out the natural flavors of the blueberries and honey.

Now here are the remaining ingredients that complete the mocktail:

    • Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice adds a tangy and citrusy kick to the mocktail and balances the sweetness of the syrup.
    • Sparkling Water: Sparkling water adds a light and bubbly element that makes this drink so refreshing. My favorite brands include Topo Chico and San Pellegrino.
    • Ice: Ice is important to any mocktail as it helps cool the drink and keeps it cold.
    • Fresh Blueberries for Garnish: Garnish with fresh blueberries for a pop of color and a hint of freshness.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Substitutions

You can substitute the blueberries with other berries such as raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries.

I prefer honey in this recipe, but other liquid sweeteners can be used such as maple syrup or agave nectar and you can also use cane sugar. Just keep in mind that the final result may differ based on the flavor of the sweetener used.

Soda water or club soda can be substituted for sparkling water.

Lemon juice can be used in place of lime juice.

How to Make Blueberry Lime Mocktail

Small pot with fresh blueberries and water.
Mashed blueberries for a simple syrup.
Straining simple syrup into a jar.

    1. Make Simple Syrup

    • Add blueberries, honey and water to a small pot.
    • Bring to a simmer and mash blueberries.
    • Remove from heat and allow to cool.
    • Strain mixture through a fine mesh sieve.
Glass with blueberry simple syrup, with a bowl with ice and some lime wedges on the side.
Tall glass with simple syrup and ice.
Pouring sparkling water in a glass that has ice and blueberry honey simple syrup.

    2. Assemble Drink

    • Add a squeeze of lime juice.
    • Fill glass with ice and top off with sparkling water.

    3. Garnish and Enjoy!

    • Garnish with fresh blueberries and a lime slice.
    • Stir gently using a long spoon or straw and enjoy.

    How to Serve

Serve the mocktails immediately to enjoy them at their freshest and coldest.

I recommend serving them in beautiful clear glasses to showcase the vibrant colors.

You could also make a large batch by adjusting the quantities of the ingredients and mixing in a large pitcher.

    How to Store

Store the blueberry simple syrup in a glass jar or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

If you made a large batch of the mocktail with sparkling water and ice in a pitcher, it's best to serve it immediately. However, if you have leftovers, pour them into a covered container or bottle and store them in the refrigerator. Keep in mind that the carbonation will decrease, so it's best to consume within the same day it is prepared.

If the mocktail has been stored for a while, you may need to add some more sparkling water.

    Tips and Variations

    • Customize It: Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less of the blueberry and honey simple syrup, or even experiment with different fruits and herbs to customize the flavors to your liking.
    • Add Mint Leaves: Muddle some mint leaves with the syrup to create a delicious blueberry mojito mocktail.
    • Use Ginger Beer: Make a blueberry mule mocktail by replacing the sparkling water with ginger beer.

    FAQ

Can I use frozen blueberries instead of fresh ones?

Yes, you can use frozen blueberries but just be sure to thaw them before using. You also may have to adjust the sweetness since frozen blueberries might be a little sweeter.

Can I add alcohol to this mocktail?

If you'd like to make this recipe into a cocktail, you could add vodka, rum, or tequila. Adjust the amount to your preference, but you could do half liquor and half sparkling water.

I hope you enjoy! If you try this recipe, please leave me a comment with a star rating below. Also, be sure to follow me on Instagram, Facebook or Pinterest to stay in touch, and don't forget to subscribe to my newsletter.
