This Cantaloupe Basil Agua Fresca is a fresh twist on classic agua de melón, made with ripe cantaloupe, fresh basil, lime and a touch of honey. The sweet melon and fragrant basil are a delicious combination, while the lime keeps the flavor bright and balanced. Instead of blending the basil into the drink, I let it gently steep in the agua fresca for a fresh basil flavor that doesn't overpower the melon. It's an easy, nourishing drink to make when cantaloupe is at its sweetest.

Aguas frescas have always been part of my life. Growing up, my mom would often make one of our favorites, Agua de Melón. I still make that classic version today, but I also love taking familiar flavors and playing around with different combinations, especially when I'm working with fresh seasonal fruit.
For this recipe, I paired sweet, ripe cantaloupe with fresh basil, lime and a little honey. The combination might not be the first one that comes to mind when you think of agua fresca, but trust me, it is great! The basil adds a fresh, slightly herbal flavor that balances the sweetness of the melon, while lime brightens everything up. If you enjoy my Honeydew Agua Fresca with Mint or my Mandarin Agua Fresca with Mint , I think you'll really enjoy this version too.
Like my other aguas frescas, this one is made with simple ingredients and lets the fruit do most of the work. Cantaloupe naturally provides vitamin C and beta-carotene, and using ripe melon means you don't need much added sweetener. It's light, refreshing and an easy way to make a pitcher of something delicious that everyone will love.

Ingredients & Substitutions

- Cantaloupe: Use a ripe, juicy cantaloupe. The sweeter the melon, the less honey simple syrup you'll need.
- Honey simple syrup: I use honey simple syrup because it dissolves easily into the cold agua fresca. You can substitute your preferred sweetener.
- Lime: Fresh lime juice adds acidity and balances the sweetness.
- Basil: Use fresh sweet basil. The basil is steeped in the finished agua fresca rather than blended for a fresh, subtle flavor.
See recipe card for a full list of the ingredients and quantities.
Step-by-Step Instructions

- Cut the Cantaloupe: Remove the seeds and cut the cantaloupe into large chunks.

- Add Ingredients: Add the cantaloupe and 3 cups of cold water into the blender.

- Blend: Blend for 1-2 minutes, or until the cantaloupe is completely smooth.

- Strain: Pour the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher. If you have a high-powdered blender and prefer a little more texture, you can skip this step.

- Add Water, Lime and Sweetener: Stir in the remaining 2 cups of cold water, fresh lime juice and honey simple syrup. Stir well, then taste and add more honey simple syrup if needed.

- Steep Basil: Gently bruise the basil leaves by pressing them between your hands or lightly rubbing them between your fingers. Add the basil leaves to the pitcher. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 2 hours.

How to Serve
Once this agua de melon tastes the way you like it, discard the leaves for a cleaner flavor and appearance. Serve cold or over ice since because the flavors are best when the agua fresca is thoroughly chilled.
Storing
Store in a covered pitcher or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. If you plan to store it, remove the basil leaves after steeping so they don't continue to infuse and become overly strong.
Give the agua fresca a stir before serving, as some natural separation may occur.
Tips from My Kitchen
- Choose a ripe cantaloupe. A fragrant, ripe melon will give the agua fresca much more flavor and natural sweetness.
- Taste before adding more sweetener. Cantaloupes vary quite a bit in sweetness, so you may need less honey simple syrup than you expect.
- Steep the basil, don't blend it. This gives the drink a fresh basil flavor without letting the herb overpower the cantaloupe.
- Adjust steeping time: A shorter steep will give you a subtle basil flavor, while a longer steep will make the basil more noticeable.

Recipe

Cantaloupe Basil Agua Fresca (Agua de Melón con Albahaca)
Equipment
- Pitcher
- mixing spoon
Ingredients
- 1 medium ripe cantaloupe cut into chunks
- 5 cups cold water divided
- 1 lime
- ¼ cup honey simple syrup plus more to taste
- 10-12 fresh basil leaves
Honey Simple Syrup (Optional but Recommended)
- ¾ cup honey
- 1 cup water
Instructions
Make the Honey Simple Syrup
- If making the honey simple syrup, combine the honey and 1 cup water in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir until the honey dissolves completely. Do not boil. Set aside and let cool completely.
Agua Fresca
- Add the cantaloupe and 3 cups of cold water to a blender. Blend for 1-2 minutes, or until smooth.
- Strain the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher, if desired.
- Stir in the remaining 2 cups of cold water and lime juice.
- Taste and add honey simple syrup (or your preferred sweetener) as needed.
- Gently bruise the basil leaves by pressing them lightly between your hands. Add the basil to the pitcher.
- Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how strong you want the basil flavor.
- Remove the basil leaves before serving.
- Serve chilled over ice.
Notes
- The sweetness will depend on how ripe your cantaloupe is, so taste the agua fresca before adding more honey simple syrup.
- For a subtle basil flavor, steep for about 30-45 minutes. For a more noticeable basil flavor, steep for 1-2 hours.
- Remove the basil after steeping so it doesn't continue to infuse and become too strong.
- If you prefer a little more texture, you can skip straining the blended cantaloupe. If using a high-powered blender, straining may not even be necessary.
