Extremely easy, fast and healthy Avocado Tostadas make a great snack, light lunch or meatless dinner. Plus fresh, creamy avocado on top of a crunchy, crisp tostada is a delicious combination.

Avocado tostadas with tomato, lettuce a container of salsa and half of an avocado

Before avocado toast was all the rage, I was deeply in love with the avocado tostada.

Growing up my mom would prepare tostadas de aguacate and top them with fresh vegetables, shredded cheese, and homemade jalapeño salsa. We would always devour every last one.

Nowadays, I make these for my husband and kids and they are also huge fans. There is just something so delicious about creamy avocado on a crunchy, crisp, and toasty corn tortilla.

Check out these other tasty tostada recipes, Tostadas de Frijoles or Ground Beef Tostadas.

    What are Tostadas?

The word tostada means toasted in Spanish. In terms of Mexican food, tostadas refer to flat corn tortillas that are either baked or fried until crispy. They are then topped with different meats, seafood, or vegetables.

Why You'll Love This Tostada Recipe

    • Easy and Fast: Not only is it delicious, but this is one of the easiest and fastest recipes you will ever make.
    • Minimal Ingredients: These tostadas only require 5 simple ingredients.
    • Vegetarian: A completely meatless meal perfect for plant-based and vegetarian diets, as well as Lent.
    • Healthy: It's like having a nutritious salad, full of vegetables and healthy fats, on a crispy, whole-grain corn tortilla.

    Ingredients & Substitutions

Lettuce, tostadas, avocados, tomatoes, shredded cheese
    • Tostada Shells: You can buy tostada shells for an even faster result, but making your own is actually extremely easy and taste so much better than store-bought. Click here to learn How to Make Tostada Shells.
    • Avocados: Choose avocados that are dark green, almost black, and yield slightly when gently squeezed. They should not be overly hard, overly soft, or mushy.
    • Lettuce: Use iceberg or romaine lettuce which are crisp and don't have an overpowering flavor.
    • Tomato: Roma tomatoes are more commonly used to top tostadas. Choose ripe tomatoes that are firm, but have a little give when pressed gently or squeezed.
    • Cheese: Use grated white Mexican cheese like a muenster or Chihuahua or a crumbled cheese like queso fresco or cotija. Leave off the shredded cheese for vegan tostadas.
    • Salsa: A salsa is optional but is the perfect addition to add extra flavor and spice. Check out the "How to Serve" section below for some salsa recipe ideas.

    See recipe card for quantities.

How to Make Tostadas de Aguacate

    Tostadas draining on paper towel
    1. Fry the Tortillas: Creating your own tostada shells is easy and taste much better than store-bought. Click here to learn How to Make Tostada Shells.
    Mashing avocado with a fork
    1. Mash Avocado: Cut and mash the avocado with the back of a fork until smooth.
Containers with lettuce, cheese, avocado and tomatoes
    1. Prepare Toppings: Wash and shred the lettuce, dice the tomato, and grate the cheese.
    Spreading avocado on a tostada
    1. Assemble Tostadas: Spread avocado first on the tostada. Top with lettuce, tomato, cheese and salsa. Sprinkle with salt. Serve immediately otherwise they will get soggy.

    How to Serve

Tostadas with avocado are great as a snack or light meal, either by themselves or with a side of Arroz con Cilantro or Mexican red rice.

For added spice and flavor, top your tostadas with one of these salsas:

    • Jalapeño Salsa
    • Serrano Salsa
    • Pico de Gallo Salsa
    • Salsa Verde Taquera

You can also top your tostadas with black beans, pinto beans or refried beans for added protein.

    How to Store

Store any leftover mashed avocado in an air-tight container. Then, press a piece of plastic wrap right on top of the avocado. Cover with the lid and store in the refrigerator for one day.

You can also mix in some lime juice as the acidity will keep the avocado from browning too quickly.

Store any leftover shredded lettuce, diced tomato and shredded cheese in small ziplock bags or air-tight containers in the refrigerator.

As for the tostada shells, leave them on the counter in a ziplock bag or an air-tight container for up to 5 days.

    Special Tip

    • Instead of plain avocado, use guacamole instead. Try either Green Chile Guacamole or Fire Roasted Guacamole.
